Wilderness Overview

Rising dramatically into the clouds along Uganda’s southwestern border, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a spectacular landscape of misty forests, bamboo-covered slopes, volcanic peaks, and rare mountain wildlife. The park forms part of the wider Virunga Conservation Area, shared by Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, creating one of Africa’s most important protected landscapes for mountain gorillas and other unique species. The name “Mgahinga” comes from the local word Gahinga, referring to the piles of volcanic stones traditionally cleared from farmland around the foot of the volcanoes. The area was first declared a game sanctuary under the British administration in 1930 and was officially gazetted as a national park in 1991. A Sanctuary for Mountain Gorillas Mgahinga protects a remarkable population of mountain gorillas, with one habituated transboundary gorilla group available for trekking. Following their trails through the dense forest offers an intimate encounter with one of the world’s most extraordinary primates, surrounded by the dramatic scenery of the Virunga Mountains. The park is also an important refuge for the endangered golden monkey, an Albertine Rift species found in the bamboo forests of the Virunga region. More than 76 mammal species have been recorded in the park, including buffaloes, elephants, leopards, bushbucks, bush pigs, giant forest hogs, and other forest wildlife. Three Volcanic Giants Mgahinga’s landscape is defined by three magnificent extinct volcanoes: Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Sabyinyo. Rising to elevations between approximately 2,227 and 4,127 metres, their forested slopes support a remarkable range of habitats and plant life. The mountains provide opportunities for more than gorilla trekking. Visitors can enjoy volcano hiking, golden monkey trekking, forest walks, birdwatching, and cultural experiences, each offering a different perspective of this extraordinary ecosystem. The Forest and the Batwa Mgahinga is also deeply connected to the history and culture of the Batwa, the indigenous forest people of the region. For generations, the Batwa lived as hunter-gatherers within the forests, developing an exceptional understanding of medicinal plants, wildlife, food sources, and the rhythms of the forest. Today, visitors can experience this heritage through a Batwa cultural experience, guided by Batwa community members who share traditional knowledge, stories, forest skills, and their deep cultural connection to the landscape. A Birdwatcher's Haven For bird enthusiasts, Mgahinga offers excellent opportunities to explore the rich birdlife of the Albertine Rift. The park has recorded more than 180 bird species, including several species associated with the Albertine Rift region. Among the highlights are the Kivu ground thrush and various turacos, making the forest particularly rewarding for keen birdwatchers. From mist-covered volcanic peaks and ancient forests to mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, and living Batwa heritage, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers a deeply immersive encounter with Uganda’s wild and cultural soul.
