From the Brink to Revival
In the late 1980s, fewer than 300 mountain gorillas remained across the volcanic slopes of the Virunga Massif and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Poaching, civil strife, and habitat fragmentation threatened total extinction.
Through the visionary partnership between the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), dedicated forest-edge communities, and responsible tourism permits, the mountain gorilla was downlisted from Critically Endangered to Endangered in 2018.
When you purchase a gorilla trekking or habituation permit with JM Jungle Safaris, the entirety of that permit fee directly funds 24/7 veterinary monitoring, armed anti-poaching ranger patrols, and community boundary initiatives.

The Batwa Heritage Project
The Batwa people are the ancient, indigenous hunter-gatherer stewards of Bwindi's old-growth forest, having inhabited its canopy for millennia before national park gazetting.
Our cultural expeditions are conceived and led directly by Batwa elders on their own terms. 100% of proceeds from our Batwa forest experiences flow into the Batwa Community Development Trust, securing ancestral land title and cultural education for the next generation.
