WHAT IS GORILLA TREKKING
Gorilla trekking is an adventure activity that involves hiking through dense forests to observe and interact with wild mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. It typically takes place in protected areas such as Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park.
During a trek, participants usually follow trained guides who help locate gorilla families. The experience is both thrilling and respectful, emphasizing conservation and minimizing human impact on these endangered species. Trekking can last anywhere from a few hours to a full day, depending on the location of the gorillas.
This unique experience offers a chance to see these incredible animals up close, learn about their behaviors, and contribute to wildlife conservation efforts.
GORILLA TREKKING IN UGANDA
Gorilla trekking in Uganda is primarily centered in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its dense forests and rich biodiversity. The park is home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas.
Trekking typically involves a guided hike through rugged terrain, where trekkers can encounter various wildlife and stunning flora. Groups are led by experienced guides who track the gorillas and ensure a safe and respectful experience.
Visitors have the chance to spend an hour observing these magnificent animals up close, learning about their behaviors and conservation efforts. Uganda’s gorilla trekking experience is not only a thrilling adventure but also supports local communities and wildlife conservation initiatives.

ABOUT MOUNTAIN GORILAS
Mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) have a fascinating history intertwined with human conservation efforts. Once widespread across the mountainous regions of Central Africa, their populations faced severe declines due to habitat loss, poaching, and disease in the 20th century.
In the early 1900s, mountain gorillas were largely unknown to the world outside their habitat. Research and interest grew in the 1950s and 1960s, notably through the work of primatologist Dian Fossey, who dedicated her life to studying and protecting them. Her efforts brought international attention to their plight and highlighted the need for conservation.
In the late 20th century, collaborative conservation efforts led to the establishment of national parks in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, creating safe havens for these gorillas. Despite facing ongoing threats, such as poaching and habitat encroachment, mountain gorilla populations have shown signs of recovery thanks to conservation programs, ecotourism, and community involvement. As of recent estimates, their numbers have increased, marking a significant success story in wildlife conservation.
