Wilderness Overview

The Serengeti is one of Africa’s last great functioning savanna ecosystems and one of the world’s most extraordinary wildlife landscapes. At its heart is the Great Migration, an immense natural cycle in which more than two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles move across the plains in search of fresh grazing and water. This remarkable journey sustains a complex web of life and shapes an ecosystem of exceptional biodiversity. Beyond the migration, the Serengeti supports an extraordinary diversity of wildlife, including elephants, African wild dogs, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and critically endangered black rhinos. The wider ecosystem also provides water, grazing, and forest resources for millions of people while creating thousands of livelihoods through conservation, tourism, and other nature-based enterprises. For more than six decades, conservation efforts have focused not only on protecting Serengeti National Park, but also on safeguarding the wider ecosystem that surrounds it. Wildlife does not recognize park boundaries, and the long-term future of the Serengeti depends on maintaining the connections between protected areas, wildlife corridors, healthy habitats, and the communities whose lives are intertwined with this remarkable landscape.
