Semuliki National Park
Semuliki National Park is a lush tropical forest in western Uganda, renowned for its exceptional birdlife, primates, hot springs, and unique Central African wildlife species.
Wilderness Overview
Semuliki National Park is a remarkable tropical forest wilderness in western Uganda, situated within the Albertine Rift near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Covering approximately 220 square kilometres, the park is famous for its ancient lowland rainforest, exceptional bird diversity, primates, butterflies, and the spectacular Sempaya Hot Springs. Unlike Uganda's savannah parks, Semuliki offers a distinctly Central African atmosphere, with dense vegetation, towering trees, humid forest trails, and wildlife associated with the Congo Basin. Tropical Forest & Landscape Semuliki protects one of Uganda's most important examples of lowland tropical rainforest. The forest is part of the larger Congo Basin ecosystem and is thought to be more than 25,000 years old. Its low elevation and tropical climate create lush conditions where enormous trees, vines, palms, ferns, and dense undergrowth dominate the landscape. Walking through the forest feels like entering a completely different world from Uganda's open savannah parks. The Semuliki River forms part of the park's ecological landscape, while the surrounding Rwenzori Mountains provide a spectacular backdrop. Sempaya Hot Springs One of Semuliki's most famous attractions is the Sempaya Hot Springs, where geothermal water emerges from beneath the earth. The site features two major springs—the male Bintente Spring and the female Nyasimbi Spring. The Nyasimbi spring is particularly impressive, with boiling water and steam rising dramatically from the ground. A guided nature walk through the forest leads visitors to the springs, providing opportunities to observe birds, monkeys, butterflies, and other forest life along the way. Wildlife Semuliki supports a fascinating mixture of East and Central African wildlife. Some species are rarely encountered elsewhere in Uganda. Wildlife includes: Forest elephants Buffaloes Chimpanzees Red-tailed monkeys Black-and-white colobus monkeys De Brazza's monkeys Mangabeys Baboons Bushbucks Waterbucks Warthogs Various duikers The park is particularly valuable for primate enthusiasts because of its remarkable diversity of forest species. Birdwatching Semuliki is regarded as one of Uganda's outstanding birding destinations, especially for travellers interested in Central African and Albertine Rift species. More than 440 bird species have been recorded in the park, including several species associated with the Congo Basin that are difficult to find elsewhere in East Africa. Birding trails through the forest can produce sightings of: Great Blue Turaco Piping Hornbill Yellow-throated Nicator White-crested Hornbill African Piculet Red-billed Dwarf Hornbill Forest Francolins Sunbirds Kingfishers Various cuckoos and barbets The dense forest means that birding often relies as much on identifying calls as on visual sightings. Primates & Forest Wildlife Semuliki provides excellent opportunities for observing primates in their natural environment. Guided forest walks can reveal monkeys moving through the canopy, while chimpanzee tracking offers the possibility of encountering one of Uganda's most iconic great apes. The forest's diverse habitats also support butterflies, reptiles, amphibians, and numerous smaller creatures that contribute to the park's exceptional biodiversity. Key Safari Activities Visitors to Semuliki National Park can enjoy: Forest nature walks Birdwatching Chimpanzee tracking Primate viewing Sempaya Hot Springs excursions Wildlife viewing Butterfly watching Photography Cultural experiences Guided forest exploration Cultural Experiences The communities around Semuliki provide opportunities to learn about the culture and traditions of the Batwa people, who have historically depended on the forests of the Albertine Rift. Community experiences may include traditional music and dance, storytelling, demonstrations of forest knowledge, and insights into traditional livelihoods. These encounters offer an opportunity to understand the deep relationship between local communities and the surrounding forest ecosystem. Best Time to Visit Semuliki can be visited throughout the year. The drier periods from June to August and December to February are generally more comfortable for forest walks, although rainfall can occur at any time because of the park's tropical climate. The wet seasons can also be rewarding for photographers and birdwatchers because the forest becomes particularly lush and active. Why Visit Semuliki National Park? Semuliki is ideal for travellers looking for an off-the-beaten-path Uganda experience. Its ancient rainforest, extraordinary birdlife, diverse primates, Central African wildlife, and steaming Sempaya Hot Springs provide experiences that are very different from traditional savannah safaris.
