Day 1: Transfer from the hotel to Mabamba Island

You will be picked up at 7am or earlier depending on where you are staying in Entebbe or Kampala. It takes about an hour to drive to Mabamba in Bhuaya. It may take longer if you stop by for bird watching on the way. Some birds can be spotted in fields, gardens, swamps and scrublands during the trip.
We quickly board a motorized wooden boat or canoe and begin exploring the waterways to find shoebills where our boatman and guide will be waiting upon arrival. It may take less than an hour to find a shoebill. If you spot a shoebill, local fishermen out at dusk may provide information.

Shoebills are most active in the early morning when they are looking for lungfish. So now is the perfect time to look for it. When hunting, they stay in place for long periods of time waiting for fish to come to them, catching them with their large shoe-shaped beaks. Shoebills can be approached without disturbing them when they are busy fishing, so you can enjoy a great view and display.

After spending some time with Shoebill, you can continue to explore different waterways and spend several hours identifying different wetland species.
From there you will have lunch and will be promptly picked up by your guide and transferred back to Kampala or Entebbe to depart for your flight. This concludes the tour.
