Rwenzori Mountain Overview

4-Day Mt Rwenzori Mountain: Detailed Trip Overview Trip Overview The best package we can offer for experienced climbers is the 4-day Mt Rwenzori Trek and Climb, Uganda. Along the western divide between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo lie the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains. The mountains, which are still known as the “Mountains of the Moon”, were formerly known as the “Ruwenzori Mountains” and are 5,109 meters above sea level. During this expedition, you will most likely be able to climb the amazing Mount Rwenzori to admire the amazing landscape, flora and the amazing Nyamwamba Valley at the top of the mountain. The entire trip includes meals, lodging, ropes and harnesses. You can also rent things like boots, sleeping bags, hats, gloves and raincoats. While stretchers and mattresses are provided, we recommend bringing a sleeping bag and warm clothes.

Rwenzori mountain Highlights

Rwenzori Mountain

Day 1: Transfer to Rwenzori Mountain National Park

Our driving guide will pick you up before 6:00 in the morning and take you to Rwenzori Mountains National Park according to your location. At the equator you have breaks to experiment and take pictures. Continue to Fort Portal for lunch before heading to the park. On arrival, you check into the lodge and relax before taking an evening walk through the forest. Dinner and rest for the night.

Day 2: Trekking Day In The Bamboo Forest

Get up early, have breakfast and head to Kyanjiki Hostel, 12 kilometers from Kasese via Kilembe. The walking experience starts at 8:00 AM if you can start at 10:00 AM. There you will meet your guide and begin the 2.2 kilometer trek to the UWA Ranger Station at 1,727 meters above sea level. Here, the park ranger will inform you about the day’s activities and rules. The walk today will be 8.6 kilometers long and should take 5 to 6 hours to complete. It will start at an altitude of 1,667 meters and rise to 3,171 meters. The first two kilometers uphill lead you into the mountain forest, where you can see tall trees covered with thick undergrowth, various bird species and primates. You will continue to follow a steep climb to the main ridge with few rocks and solid footing unless it rains heavily.

There you can find pristine forests with a diverse variety of trees and plants. Groups of 15 to 20 black and white colobus monkeys can easily be seen among the trees at our meal site. After lunch, we will hike another half kilometer to a small cave that was once a hideout for poachers. Many birds and insects make dense bamboo their home. Slowly approaching the 3000m mark, the rather lovely bamboo gave way to huge heathers covered in beard moss. At the end of the day’s hike, stop at Samarila Camp for panoramic views of the foothills of Lake George and Queen Elizabeth National Park, with a clear view of the town of Kasese to the left.

Day 3: Hiking Day to descend through the Bamboo Forest

After breakfast we start the descent through the bamboo forest. This area is much wetter than the trail on the south windward side of the mountain where there is more rain, leading to the Samarila camp. At about 2,600m, the bamboo gives way to African montane forest as we pass through sinusoidal rock shelters. A man named Sine lived in a rock shelter for over 30 years while he hunted animals on the mountain. From there we descend to the base of the ridge where we can cross a large, rapid stream to the Musenga rock shelter. We have lunch here, take a break before walking the last 6 km through dense highland forest to the marshalling station. After a short debrief, we will say goodbye and hike the last 1.2 km to the waiting vehicles and hostel. Dinner and rest for the night.

Day 4: Return back to Entebbe Airport

Wake up, have breakfast, then proceed to Kampala where you will be dropped off at your hotel or Entebbe Airport and taken home. This will mark the end of your 4-day trek up Mount Rwenzori.
