Safaris in Uganda Africa – Uganda has over half of all bird species in Africa and 11% of bird species globally. A lot of the birds in Uganda can only be found there. Because there are a lot of birds in a small country, birders can easily travel to different places in the country to see many different species of birds. Uganda is home to over half of the only 1,000 mountain gorillas left in the world. These gorillas are found only in Uganda, Rwanda, and DR Congo. This travel plan shows you the top places to visit in Uganda.

Day 1: Arrive at Entebbe International Airport - Safaris in Uganda Africa
We prefer to relax and rest on the first day of our arrival. When you get to Entebbe, our guide will meet you and take you to where you will be staying. We have carefully chosen accommodations that are very bird-watcher friendly. We enjoy calm places that are friendly to birds too.
The hotel has a beautiful garden that is taken care of. The garden has plants that are from this area and they attract birds that can only be found in this region, like the shiny Red-chested, Scarlet-chested and Olive-bellied Sunbirds.
Day 2: Shoebil and Entebbe Botanical Gardens - Safaris in Uganda Africa
This morning we went to the famous Mabamba wetlands to find Africa’s most wanted bird, the Shoebill. We need to be in the right swamps where the lungfish can easily find its favorite food. We won’t spend much time observing birds on the way because we want to save time. However, we might take a quick look at bird species that we may not have the opportunity to see again during the trip. Some of these birds are the Ovambo Sparrow-hawk and the Bat-hawk which is active during dusk and dawn.
At Mabamba, we will go on a boat ride for at least two hours to look for a bird called the Shoebill and other African water birds like the Yellow-billed Duck and African Jacana. After that, we will go back to Entebbe for a quick rest before going to the Entebbe Botanical Gardens to see more birds in the afternoon.
The Botanical Gardens in Entebbe have a few plant and animal species that are only found in Africa. Some of the incredible bird species that our groups always love to see are the Great Blue Turaco, Ross’s Turaco, and the Eastern Plantain Eater. We also often spot various Weaver birds, which are truly amazing.
Day 3: Entebbe to Masindi - Safaris in Uganda Africa
We will make a plan and avoid getting stuck in heavy traffic while driving past Kampala. The tour will go to Masindi, a lively town in the northern part of Uganda. We will go slowly and look carefully in certain places near the road to find birds like the White Crested Turaco, White-headed Barbet, Yellow-billed Shrike, and Yellow-bellied Hyliota, and some other birds too.
The gardens at Masindi Hotel are always good for evening walks to look at birds. Afterward, we can enjoy the friendly service and comforts at Uganda’s oldest hotel, Masindi Hotel.
Day 4: Birding The Royal Mile - Safaris in Uganda Africa
We will create a strategy to prevent getting caught in lots of cars when driving through Kampala. The tour will visit Masindi, a busy town in the northern area of Uganda. We will move slowly and watch closely in specific areas by the road to find birds such as the White Crested Turaco, White-headed Barbet, Yellow-billed Shrike, Yellow-bellied Hyliota, and some other birds as well.
The gardens at Masindi Hotel are a great place to go for a walk in the evening and look at birds. Later, we can have a good time at Uganda’s oldest hotel, Masindi Hotel, where we will receive kind service and enjoy comfortable surroundings.
Day 5: Birding in Murchison Falls - Safaris in Uganda Africa
This morning, we will go to Murchison Falls National Park and stop at KaniyoPabidi to look at birds. This is the only location in East Africa where the Puvel’s Illadopsis bird can be found. We will search for it and also find any birds we may have missed yesterday. The forest in this area goes all the way to the Royal Mile. We want to look for Yellow and Grey Long-bills, Blue-breasted Kingfisher, and White Spotted Flufftail.
There are many healthy Common Chimpanzees, Mantled Guerezas, Blue Monkeys, and Red-tailed Monkeys that live here. It is usually not difficult to see them while walking and watching birds.
After we eat, we will go further into the park by going up to the highest point of Murchison Falls. These are the strongest and most exciting things in the world. We will search for birds like the Green-backed Eremomela, Grey-headed Bush-shrike, White-fronted Black-chat, and the Rock Pratincole while driving to our place to stay.
Day 6: Boat Ride to The Bottom of The Falls - Safaris in Uganda Africa
We are going to go see the beautiful open landscape of the Murchison Falls National Park. This provides great chances to take good pictures while watching important species of animals. We will search for animals from the northern DR Congo and South Sudan in Uganda because this park has the most animals from both places. We need to look for Zitting, Foxy, Rattling, Balc-backed, Siffling, Red-faced, and Croaking Cisticolas.
This place is great for animals fromCentral Africa. We will see birds like Heuglin’s Francolin, Denham’s and Black-bellied Bustards, Herlequin and Common Quails, Black-headed Gonolek, Spotted Morning Thrush, Northern Carmine, Swallow-tailed, and Red-throated Bee-eaters.
This park is well-known for its large animals, and the most amazing sights happen when Cape Buffaloes hang out with Piapiacs and Yellow-billed Oxpeckers, while Red-necked Falcons hunt together above them.
In the afternoon, we will go on a boat trip against the current to get to the bottom of the waterfall.
Day 7: Birding for Delta and Game Drive - Safaris in Uganda Africa
This morning we will go on a boat trip going in the direction of the current. The trip back takes longer than the trip there because we go slowly through the forest by the river. We search through the bushes and tall trees hanging over the river for the hard-to-find Pel’s Fishing Owl, Red-winged Grey Warbler, Silverbird, White-rumped seed eater, Sulphur-breasted Bush-shrike, Beautiful Sunbird, and Grey-capped Warbler, among other birds.
The marshes at the Delta are well-known for the Shoebill, and this is our second opportunity to see them, which we can trust and rely on.
When it starts to cool down in the afternoon, we go back to the roads where we drive around looking for animals and then we go back to our accommodation.
Day 8: Transfer to Kibale Forest National Park - Safaris in Uganda Africa
Today, after you finish eating your breakfast, you will be taken from Murchison to Kibale National Park. Along the way, you will be given a packed lunch to eat. We will need to take breaks at places where we can see birds while we are traveling. Come to Turaco Treetops during the afternoon. Come and register your arrival and then take it easy for the remainder of the day. Stay overnight and have dinner at the lodge.
Day 9: Chimpanzee Trekking - Safaris in Uganda Africa
Start your day early in the famous bird watching place called Kibale forest. Walk through the forest and enjoy seeing many different types of birds that live in Africa’s biggest hardwood forest. Look out for some birds like the Green-breasted Pitta, Masked and Black-capped Apalis, and White-naped Pigeon, African Crowned Eagle, Scaly-breasted and Brown Illadopsis, Brown-chested and Fire-crested Alethes, and more.
This park is very proud to have a large variety of species and to be the main home for Common Chimpanzees. Kibale has the most Common Chimpanzees out of all the protected areas in the world. After we finish watching the birds, we will look for chimpanzees.
We might also see Red-tailed, Blue, and L’Honest’s Monkeys, Mantled Guereza, Uganda Red Colobus, and Uganda Mangabey.
In the afternoon, we will take a walk in Bigodi wetland to see different kinds of plants called papyrus. Some of the plants we will look for are the Papyrus Gonolek, White-winged Warbler, Papyrus canary, White-spotted fluff tail, Black-faced Rufous Warbler, and brown Illadopsis – Safaris in Uganda Africa
Day 10: Queen Elisabeth National Park - Safaris in Uganda Africa
Today, we will search for the shy and hard-to-find Pitta bird once again in the early morning. If we find certain birds yesterday, we will go back to the forest or search near the forest for other birds that can only be found in that area. We want to find many different birds, like Sabine’s Spinetail, Cassin’s and Ayer’s Hawk-Eagles, White-tailed Anti-thrush, Red-chested owlet, Black-capped Apalis, Green-throated and Green-headed sunbirds, Black bee-eater, Scarce Swift, Cassin’s Flycatcher, and Mountain wagtail, among others. In the afternoon, we will go to Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Day 11: Birding in Queen Elisabeth NationalPark - Safaris in Uganda Africa
It’s a joyful morning and a time for you to explore different paths while you go on your morning wildlife excursion. This drive gives you lots of great views of many birds in the Savannah, and you might also see animals like lions, elephants, and other types of animals. The boat ride in the afternoon on the Kazinga channel will let you see many water birds and also hippos and crocodiles. Go back to your home at the very comfortable Mweya Safari Lodge.
Day 12: Birding to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park - Safaris in Uganda Africa
If you really want to see the birds in Uganda, you can go to Bwindi National Park in the morning. The road goes through Ishasha, a part of Queen Elizabeth National Park known for the lions that climb trees. While looking for lions and other animals that climb trees, we will pay attention to the birds. The wide open land here is really good for a few types of birds that like to hunt. We will probably see them flying high in the sky.
These birds are the Long-crested, Wahlberg’s, and Tawny Eagles, as well as the Banded, Brown, and Black-chested Snake-Eagles. Palm-nut, Hooded, White-backed, Ruppel’s Griffon, White-headed, and Lapped-faced Vultures are also frequently seen flying in the skies in this area. These bushes are great for African Pygmy, Stripped and Woodland Kingfishers, Marsh, Black and Brown-crowned Tchagras, Moustached Grass Warbler, and more.
Day 13: Gorilla Trekking - Safaris in Uganda Africa
When the sun comes up and shows how beautiful the forest looks from where you’re staying, it’s a good idea to wake up early and have breakfast. Grab your walking stick and join your assigned ranger/guide. Follow the journey of evolution and track down the Mountain Gorillas, which are closely related to humans and are in high demand. Obey the rules and laws that the guide tells you, they will show you the path to the gorilla sanctuary.
When you arrive where the gorillas are, stay relaxed and observe them as they play, eat, and move between tree branches.
You can only spend one hour with mountain gorilla family. After that, the ranger will take you back to the starting point. When you come back, you will get a certificate that tells you the location of your package. After you receive your certificate and maybe buy a souvenir, go back to where you’re staying and cherish the wonderful memories you made with the great apes – Safaris in Uganda Africa
Day 14: Birding in Buhoma - Safaris in Uganda Africa
This area of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is special because it has a variety of different birds. The reason for this is because it is in the middle of the forest and acts as a place where different types of birds interact. This is the place where birds from the lowland and mountain forests meet. We spend the day in the forest and use our time well. Have a good time in a forest that is not very humid and search for some of the most famous animals that hide in the dense plants on the ground. Search for the Kivu Ground thrush, Neumann’s Warbler, Red-faced woodland warbler, and Willard’s Sooty Boubou.
Day 15 Birding in Ruhija
Enjoy the clean and refreshing environment of Buhoma as you move to the Ruhija region of Bwindi National Park. Before we reach the mountains, we make a stop at a place called the “neck. ” This place is also a popular spot for birds that like to stay at medium-height. The streams have cool birds like Mountain Wagtail, African Black Duck, and Cassin’s Flycatcher. However, we will also search in the thick low vegetation and topmost layer of trees for Chapin’s Flycatcher, Manycoloured-bush shrike, Luhder’s Bush-Shrike, and Pettit’s Cuckoo-shrike, among other birds.
Afternoon will come, and once we have settled into our place to stay, we will go for a walk on the community trail. During our walk, we will see some rare and special birds that live at this high altitude. Make yourself comfortable at the lodge.
Day 16: Birding in Ruhija Trails
Ruhija is a higher area in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest with nice and cooler weather for bird-watching. We will start working in the forests early in the morning and stay there for the whole day. This is the place where there are many animals and plants that can only be found in the Albertine Rift, and we want to see as many of them as possible. The main Mubwindi trail ends at the bottom of Mubwindi swamp. This is where you can find a lot of the Grauer’s Broadbill and Grauer’s Rush Warbler, which are very popular birds. But, as we make our way to this wetland area, we will go slowly and investigate the dense areas of this section of the park.
We are looking for specific birds like Regal, Grauer’s Warbler, Red-faced Woodland Warbler, Stripe-breasted Tit, Black-faced Apalis, Blue-headed and Purple-breasted Sunbirds, Strange Weaver, Red-throated Alethe, Rwenzori Batis, and Rwenzori Apalis, along with other birds that are found only in the Albertine Rift region. The list of rare species you can see is impressive and something to be proud of. You might spot Bar-tailed Trogon, Mountain and Augur Buzzard, and African Hill Babbler.
Day 17: Birding to Lake Mburo
Have a beautiful drive this morning as you go from Bwindi to Lake Mburo National Park. We will stop along the way to see birds and make our journey more exciting. Go for a boat ride on the peaceful waters of L. In the evening, you can watch different types of birds in Mburo. Some of the bird species you might see include African finfoot, Green Backed Heron, Roufus Bellied Heron, Black Crowned Night Heron, Giant Kingfisher, and Africa Fish Eagle.
Day 18: Birding in Lake Mburo
Early in the morning, you are invited to go on a walk to see the CoquiFrancolin and Temminck’s Courser. After your guide gives you some information, begin the hike and look for various birds like the Red-face Barbet, Long-tailed Cisticola, Lilac-breasted Roller, Emerald-spotted Wood-dove, Green Wood-hoopoe, Spot-flanked Barbet, and Chin-spot Batis.
In the afternoon, you can go on a boat ride to look for the African Finfoot, which is the most famous bird in the park. You might also see the Giant Kingfisher, Papyrus Gonolek, and White-winged Warbler.
By the end of today, we will have found amazing mammals while bird watching trips. Some of the large animals that were recently brought in are Giraffes, Zebras, Elands, Topis, Impalas, and others. Come back to the lodge for dinner and to stay overnight.
Day 19: Lake Mburo to Igongo Cultural Centre
We will walk through the park and stop to find different birds like the Collared, Red-faced, and Crested Barbets, Violet-backed Starling, Common Scimitterbill, and Green Wood-hoopoe, among others. You also like the beautiful hills in Uganda’s smallest national park at the same time. Go to Igongo Cultural Center to have lunch and also explore the museum. In the afternoon, we will go to either Kampala or Entebbe, depending on what you prefer, to start your journey back home the next day.
Day 20: Departure at Entebbe Airport
Get out of bed this morning and have a calm and enjoyable breakfast. Have fun exploring the gardens at your hotel and trying to see some birds before getting your bags ready to leave.
