RWENZORI NATIONAL PARK
- | Rwenzori National Park
Rwenzori National Park – Along the western border of Uganda with the Law-based Republic of Congo runs the Rwenzori Mountains, otherwise and more broadly impractically known as “The Mountains of the Moon,” which run for about 120kms, rising to an altitude of 5,100 meters above ocean level. Here the magnificent mountains and the stunning beautiful fogs that envelop the modified crests give a one of its kind landscape to one of Uganda’s finest and most magnificent National parks. The few crests of this center run, which boasts Africa’s third highest mountain, carry permanent snow and ice sheets, while the lower inclines are covered with thick woodland, moorland completely interesting greenery – Rwenzori National Park
Uniqueness of Mountain Rwenzori National Park
Rwenzori National Park – It is such that the mountain range of Rwenzori National Park is not a volcanic formation. Rather, it rises straight from the floor of the Great Rift Valley as created during the formation of the valley itself. Highest peaks, perpetually covered by snow and ice, are Margherita at 5,109 meters and Alexandra on Mount Stanley at 5,083 meters. The range contains another four other glaciated peaks, which include Mount Speke at 4,890 meters, Mount Emin at 4,791 meters, Mount Gessi at 4,715 meters, and Mount Luigi da Savoia at 4,627 meters.
These are towering heights that contribute to the Rwenzori’s status as one of the most demanding yet beautiful places for mountaineers and hikers. It has been an exciting subject of study and exploration for both geologists and nature and adventure lovers due to its origin through geologic activity and stunning, ice-cloaked peaks of mountains.
Rwenzori National Park –Even the beautiful Mountains of the Moon offer firmer hiking and mountaineering challenges. The situation, therefore, is such that while one can generally go on a trek below parastatal elevations if reasonably fit, he or she would not venture into the higher altitudes unless fully fit, experienced, and guided. There are various hiking and mountain climbing circuits within the park itself.
Mountains of the Moon National Park is also home to more than 70 mammal species as well as over 175 species of birds, most of which are Albertine Rift endemics. Most of the mammalian species are primates and antelopes, though there are a few other creatures like the forest elephant, Golden Cat, servaline genet, and forest hogs. Various avian lives attract birdwatchers and increase the list of rich biodiversity here.
This unique ecosystem and landscapes with scenic beauty form a paradise for nature and adventure seekers. From the variety of wildlife to the thrill of making a grueling climb, the resultant experience at Mountains of the Moon shall indeed be simply unforgettable. Always be well-equipped and guided by an experienced professional to enjoy this great natural wonder to the fullest and navigate it in safety.
