RWENZORI NATIONAL PARK

Rwenzori National Park –  Along the western border of Uganda with the Law-based Republic of Congo runs the Rwenzori Mountains, otherwise and more broadly impractically known as “The Mountains of the Moon,” which run for about 120kms, rising to an altitude of 5,100 meters above ocean level. Uniqueness of Mountain Rwenzori National Park

Rwenzori National Park – It is such that the mountain range of Rwenzori National Park is not a volcanic formation. Rather, it rises straight from the floor of the Great Rift Valley as created during the formation of the valley itself. Highest peaks, perpetually covered by snow and ice, are Margherita at 5,109 meters and Alexandra on Mount Stanley at 5,083 meters. The range contains another four other glaciated peaks, which include Mount Speke at 4,890 meters, Mount Emin at 4,791 meters, Mount Gessi at 4,715 meters, and Mount Luigi da Savoia at 4,627 meters.Rwenzori National Park

Mountains of the Moon National Park is also home to more than 70 mammal species as well as over 175 species of birds, most of which are Albertine Rift endemics. Most of the mammalian species are primates and antelopes, though there are a few other creatures like the forest elephant, Golden Cat, servaline genet, and forest hogs. Various avian lives attract birdwatchers and increase the list of rich biodiversity here.

Rare and surprise causing flora includes Monster Lobelia, giant heather trees, thick bamboo forests and open moorland. At altitudes above 3000mts there’s much fewer flora and definitely very few animals or birds .Rwenzori National Park

By road: From Kampala via Mbarara to Kasese then onward to Ibanda. Also from Kampala via Post entrance and then 75km on the Post entry Kasese road south.

It has mountain hovels and shake covers available to the climbers.
